it seems that there is exist rivalry between closed and open source software. on the street, the war is represented by the rivalry between microsoft and various linux distros. the question is, what is open source ?

open source initiative define the term as a method of software development that harness the power of peer review and transparency of the process. the pledge is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, and the most important thing is that it is low cost. such philosophy is contrasted with the philosophy of the closed-source software that locked-in for the sake of merely profit.

according to such philosophy, i just imagined that this is a big and noble movement that promises for the better world. better world that based on transparency and collaboration. what a movement, support it if you can.

i only at glance exposed to several linux distros. a few years ago, I exposed to Mandrake and Red Hat by intentionally install it on my pc. later, I only hear about mandriva without curiosity to feel it on my desktop. now, suddenly everything on the campus named as ubuntu. generally, ubuntu is growing bigger.

like the others, ubuntu has its own distinctive identity. philosophically, the name is rooted from south africa philosophy of humanity toward others. on the development side, ubuntu releases its new version every 6 months. the distro has a strong commitment for education by releasing Edubuntu and Kubuntu that that intended to support education. but the real question is, what actually makes ubuntu specific ?
